LUPE and the RGV Equal Voice Network have begun a 40-day fast chain, Ayuno y Oracion en Contra de la Militarización y a Favor de Ciudadanía (Fast and Prayer against Militarization and for Citizenship), to deliver a strong moral argument for immigration reform, that reforms to immigration and border enforcement should treat everyone with the compassion they deserve as human beings.
Each day at 12pm we will gather at LUPE’s San Juan office, located at the corner of Cesar Chavez Rd and Business 83, where individuals will begin their fast and will share their reasons for making the 24 hour sacrifice. Join us each day at 12 noon starting August 26 and continuing until October 4 at noon. Join us for one or more days at our office or join the virtual fast via Facebook. Your participation in the fast will inspire members of the community to put their conscience into action and pick up the fast.
The joint acts of Fasting and Prayer has its roots in spiritual tradition going back for centuries. Great leaders have used these tools to clarify their own thinking about important issues and to encourage others to do the same. Mahatma Ghandi is among the most famous proponents of these twin tools for discerning a path forward during difficult and even dangerous times.
In the earliest days of the Farm Worker Movement, farmworkers were treated inhumanely and regularly denied even the most basic human rights. The struggle for Justice in the Fields seemed almost impossible to win. Grape strikers were faced with violence at every turn and many were tempted to turn away from the non-violent approach that Cesar Chavez embraced, to strike back when they were threatened. That was the first time that Cesar began a Fast, very much in the style of one of his heroes, Ghandi.
Join the fast and show your support for immigration reform that does not militarize our border!
