You are cordially invited to join us for the dedication & unveiling of the Historical Marker honoring the 1966 Farm worker Strike and March.
In the Summer of 1966, hundreds of men, women and children harvesting cantaloupes in Starr County organized with the United Farm Workers and demanded growers raise wages from .40 cents to $1.25 an hour. on July 4, 1966 strikers began a peaceful 400 mile march to Austin, TX. On July 7, Mayor Al Ramirez greeted the marchers passing through the city of Edinburg on their way to a mass at the shrine of Our Lady of San Juan served by Bishop Humberto Madeiros. Farm workers continued through Weslaco, Edcouch-Elsa, and other South Texas communities towards the state capitol where they were received by hundreds of supporters.

Tania Chavez signed Pledge to Vote for Prop 1 for a Healthy Hidalgo County! 2016-10-28 15:00:59 -0500
As a community union founded by farmworker leader Cesar Chavez, La Union del Pueblo Entero has the privilege of responding to the needs of some of the most humble members of our community: colonia residents working to improve the quality of their neighborhoods, immigrants working to provide a better life for their families, low-income parents working to pave the road toward opportunity so that one day their children are better off than they are. It is a joy to work with these dedicated, hardworking community members toward the goal of creating a better Rio Grande Valley where all have access to opportunity. But standing in the way of that opportunity is our county’s dismal access to healthcare.
We want to see the Rio Grande Valley thrive, but without strong health care services, including specialty care not available here, we can’t reach our potential as a region. It is a joy to work with these dedicated, hardworking community members toward the goal of creating a better Rio Grande Valley where all have access to opportunity. But standing in the way of that opportunity is our county’s dismal access to healthcare.114 pledges
